High tuition keeps many high achievers from entering elite schools, study finds

"Using data from the National Center for Education Statistics, Anthony Carnevale, vice president of the Educational Testing Service and coauthor of the study, identified 30,000 low-income black and Hispanic students and 200,0000 low-income white students who qualified for one of the 180,000 freshmen seats at the 146 elite schools.
An elite school is defined by the high academic qualifications of the freshmen and by national surveys.
"There are lots of qualified minority and low-income students if you dig them out," he said

Now here's a switch: "The decline in white enrollment continued this school year at Fayetteville State University, but school officials are working on plans to increase diversity.
The percentage of white students at the historically black college has been declining since a peak of about one-third in 1991. This year's enrollment is about one-fifth white."
